Wrapping Sandwiches

Whether you order a sandwich from the shop or make it at home, we can all agree that the technique for wrapping a sandwich can be just as important as that sandwich building itself. A poorly wrapped sandwich can result in a soggy and sad mess. To keep your sandwich’s shape and hold the ingredients in place, utilize these sandwich wrapping techniques.

Before we begin, you will need parchment paper or waxed paper and tape. You can use the precut sandwich papers, or simply cut sheets straight from the roll. And if you have a hot sandwich, or are planning to slice your sandwich in half, aluminum foil will come in handy.

Flat Sandwiches
For flat sandwiches, you want to begin with a rectangular sheet of parchment (or waxed) paper. Set the paper on the work surface in front of you vertically (a.k.a. portrait, not landscape).

Place the sandwich in the center of the paper, and, if the bread has a discernible top, bottom and sides, set it so that the top is away from you.

Next, bring the top and bottom edges of the paper together over the center of the sandwich, and line them up. Fold the edges down by half an inch, crease sharply, and then continue folding in half-inch turns and creasing sharply until the fold is flush with the surface of the sandwich. The number of folds will vary depending on the size of your sandwich and the length of the paper.

The left and right sides of the paper will then look like flattened tubes. Starting on one side, use your fingers to press the opposing edges into the center, forming a pleated triangle. Press down and crease the triangles edges, including at the base of the sandwich, and then carefully fold it underneath. Repeat these steps with the other side.

If you are wrapping a hot sandwich, you may use this same method with foil instead; however, skipping the parchment paper may make it hard to eat on the go as the foil may cling to parts of your sandwich.

Subs & Wraps
For long sandwiches, it can be tricky since the measurement of your paper will depend on the size of your sandwich.  A good rule of thumb is to cut a piece of parchment paper that’s about one and a half times the length of your sub or wrap.

Again, begin by setting the paper down in front of you vertically (like with the flat sandwich), and then place the sandwich diagonally across the paper near one of the corners.

Next, lift the corner closest to the sandwich up and over the sandwich, and then press it flush. From there, roll the sandwich in paper toward the far opposite corner, folding in the sides as you go. Once the sandwich is fully rolled with everything tucked in, use a piece of tape to secure it.

And if your sandwich is hot, you can use this technique to wrap it with foil alone or over the paper.

Salad Base

With our Mixed Greens salad, you basically create a salad your way. First, you can choose your salad base. Enjoy a salad with lettuce, mixed greens, or if you prefer, you can create an all spinach salad. It’s up to you, but one thing is certain – we only use the finest and freshest ingredients available to us.

Choose Veggies

Next, you can choose which veggies to add to your salad. We have sliced pickles, sliced cucumber, olives, chopped bell peppers, sliced red onions, tomatoes, and pepperoncinis. Depending on your preferences, you can add any or all of them. That’s the beauty of our mixed greens salad.

Choose Dressing

You can keep your salad simple and light with just oil and vinegar and salt and pepper to dress it. We also have a delicious Balsamic Vinaigrette, which we make in house from our own special recipe. And we make our own Italian dressing in house, which delivers classic Italian flavors. If you like creamy dressing, we have 1000 Island or Ranch dressing, too. You can also make it a dry salad. Like we said, it’s whatever you like.

Meat & Cheese*

For an additional charge, you can add your choice of meat(s) and/or cheese(s). Your cheese options include either Feta cheese, or our Boar’s Head Provolone cheese. For meat, you can add Boar’s Head meats. These include Black Forest Ham, Ovengold Turkey, or Genoa Salami. And if you fancy our Chicken Shawarma, you can add this to your salad as well!

Celebrate National Salad Month With Our Pasta Salad

Best Salads In Pomona, CAAs National Salad Month rolls on, we take a look at our yummy Pasta Salad. Made fresh in house and served cold, our pasta salad goes well with our yummy sandwiches and is great for catering orders, too.

With summer around the corner, pasta salad is quite refreshing and a crowd favorite. Typically, pasta salads are usually served chilled and made with one of more types of pastas, tossed in a vinegar, oil, or mayonnaise-based dressing. Other ingredients may be added, based on region, availability, preference, and are usually up to the discretion of the chef.

For our pasta salad, we use bowtie pasta mixed with Boar’s Head meat and cheese. We only use the finest and freshest ingredients available to us, and allowing for amazing flavor in every bite.

After cooking and cooling our bowtie pasta, we mix it with chopped red bell peppers, cheese, ham or salami, basil and lemon. But what makes our pasta salad stand out among others is our house made Italian dressing. We have our own special recipe which delivers authentic Italian flavors. A light drizzle is just the right amount to keep our pasta salad light yet flavorful.

National Grilled Cheese Month

National Grilled Cheese Day has come and gone (April 12), however, you can still celebrate and enjoy the greatness of the grilled cheese. The entire month of April is National Grilled Cheese Month. In honor of the gooey, grilled cheese greatness, did a little research about how people feel about the grilled cheese. Here’s what they came up with:

A whopping 86% of the adults surveyed say they “love” grilled cheese sandwiches.

Of these grilled cheese fans, 60% say they prefer a grilled cheese sandwich that mixes two types of cheeses (We prefer three cheeses). Grilled cheese purists only make up 40%.

Speaking of cheese, here are the most popular: American (41%), Cheddar (33%), Mozzarella (10%), Swiss (8%), Provolone (6%), Brie (2%).

As far as bread choices go, here are the favorites: White Bread (51%), Wheat (29%), Sourdough (13%), Rye (4%), Baguette (3%).

To add or not to add? 47% say they like to add extras to their sandwich (ex. tomatoes, pesto), while the other 53% prefer cheese only.

As mentioned, this year’s theme promotes making plans for a healthy lifestyle by consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices, and exercising daily. The goal is to maintain a healthy body weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and support overall health maintenance. Below you will find ways to help get you started on the path to a healthy lifestyle.

Consume Less Calories

The key to consuming less calories isn’t about depriving yourself from your guilty pleasures. Instead, practice portion control. Check the label and portion a single serving to enjoy, rather than snacking directly from the box or bag. And to feel fuller longer, incorporate more water, fiber, and protein in your diet. Feeling satiated for longer periods will not only cut down on unhealthy snacking, but you’ll likely feel better as well.

Make Informed Food Choices

When it comes to packaged foods, don’t believe all the claims. Take the time to check the nutrition facts and ingredients to really know what you’re putting into your body. Ingredients are listed in descending order based on the amount within the product. The first few ingredients should be things you can identify, so if it is something you can’t even pronounce, or if there is lots of added sugar or starches, it might be best to skip it.

Daily Exercise

You don’t necessarily need to hit it hard at the gym every day, but a little exercise to get your heart pumping daily is helpful. It is recommended that a person does about 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least 5 days a week, but you can gradually work your way up to that. Things like taking a walk around the block or the park can get you started on the right path. Not only does exercise help control weight, but it also increases your mood and energy levels and promotes better sleep. To celebrate National Cheese Lover’s Day, we are sharing some fun facts about your favorite food (via Foodimentary, International Dairy Foods Association, CNN).

  • Cheese takes up about 1/10 the volume of the milk it was made from.
  • Cheeses are more flavorful at room temperature.
  • Let cold cheese warm up for about half an hour before eating to allow the flavor and aroma to develop.

  • Do not store cheese with other strong-smelling foods. As a cheese breathes it will absorb other aromas and may spoil.
  • The average American consumes about 31 pounds of cheese each year versus the average French person consuming 50 pounds each year.
  • There are more than 900 known cheeses in the world, and they can all be classified by texture. Celebrate National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day At The Brick Market & Deli!

Tasty slices of pastrami are most often served with pickles and mustard on rye bread, but are sometimes paired with coleslaw or Russian dressing, or even served on a French roll. While there are several ways to enjoy a pastrami sandwich, whatever your preference, the great flavor and texture of pastrami is undeniable. Which is why we take a day (January 14, to be exact) to celebrate the deliciousness that is the Hot Pastrami Sandwich.

To celebrate the sandwich, let’s go over a little bit of pastrami history. The Romanian word for preserve - a păstra – is considered the root word of “pastrami.” And that’s exactly what is done. Meats were cured to preserve the meat quality before refrigerators existed. Pastrami was no exception. The meat, usually beef brisket, is cured with a salty paste of spices like coriander, mustard seeds and black peppercorns, and then smoked. The pastrami is sliced, and then reheated before serving.

It is said that the first pastrami sandwich came from a New York deli owned by Sussman Volk in 1887. Legend has it that Sussman let an acquaintance store luggage at his shop in exchange for his pastrami recipe. Pastrami was originally sold in chunks, until Sussman decided to slice it and put it in a sandwich, and the rest is history. So on January 14, let’s take a moment to honor Sussman Volk for introducing us to a deli favorite and enjoy his specialty – a hot pastrami sandwich.

Celebrate National Brownie Day At The Brick Market & Deli!

December 8 marks National Brownie Day, and we can’t deny a day celebrating one of the sweetest treats! Not quite a cake, not quite a cookie, but delicious nonetheless. Have you ever wondered how brownies came to be?

You may have heard myths like a chef accidentally melted chocolate into biscuit dough, or a cook forgot to add flour to the batter. However, it is said that a special dessert was requested for ladies attending the Chicago 1893 World Fair. The dessert was to be cake-like, yet small enough to be eaten from boxed lunches. A chef at Chicago’s Palmer House Hotel eventually created the first brownie, topped with walnuts and an apricot glaze. To this day, the same recipe is still served there (now “The Palmer House Hilton”).
