Superfoods Swaps

Once a new superfood is declared, it starts to pop up everywhere. From restaurant menus to your local grocery store, demand for superfoods is often high (even higher if it aids with weight loss). Unfortunately, with this high demand comes high prices. Luckily, there is a wealth of nutritious foods out there for a fraction of superfood prices. Here are some smart superfood swaps that won’t break the bank.

Quinoa -> Wheat Berries

Quinoa is actually lower in fiber and protein content than wheat berries.

Chia Seeds -> Flax Seeds

While their nutritional content is relatively comparable, flaxseeds contain 9% of the RDA iron while chia seeds contain none.

Coconut Oil -> Virgin Olive Oil

Coconut oil is not ideal for higher heat cooking, while virgin olive oil is best from medium-high heat cooking.

Kale ->  Spinach

If you’re looking for similar nutritional benefits of kale but for a lower price, spinach is a smart option.

Goji Berries -> Blueberries

Both are great sources of antioxidants, however, blueberries are slightly more accessible (and definitely less expensive) than goji berries.

Wheatgrass ->  Broccoli

Broccoli is a smart alternative for wheatgrass as their nutritional content is relatively similar with slight variations in vitamin and mineral content.

Golden berries  -> Apricots

Golden berries tout excellent benefits, but for a much smaller price, apricots can also provide great nutritional benefits.

Salmon -> Sardines

While your taste buds may disagree, sardines are a great swap salmon if its omega 3 fatty acids that you’re looking for.

Other good, affordable foods to incorporate into your diet:

  • Plain yogurt (look for active bacterial cultures)
  • Berries Oatmeal
  • Ginger
  • Eggs
  • Beets
  • Almonds (and other nuts)

While superfoods promise wonderful nutritional and health benefits, it is wise to have a diet that includes variety. Eating the same things over and over can get boring. Plus diet diversity can help maintain healthy gut bacteria.
